• Fermentation:

There are the two types of beer, «Lager» and «Ale», according to their fermentation. The former is of low fermentation whereas the latter is of high fermentation. The difference in fermentation lies in the type of brewer’s yeast used for beer production. Ale beers ?of high fermentation? use ordinary and natural brewer’s yeast that acts at 12-24oC (54-75oF). Lager uses a stranger brewer’s yeast that acts at 7-13oC (44-55oF).

• Ingredients:

Many beers are produced exclusively with malt, but those which have another ingredient ?some grain? tend to indicate it. Within beers that use some kind of grain to accompany barley malt we can find wheat beer and oats beer. We want to emphasize the fact that the grain does not replace malt but accompanies it. In the case of hop, there is neither explanation nor specification whatsoever as regards the type of hop.

• Appearance:

Beer is often classified by its color ?blonde, red, black, amber, etc. The color of a beer comes from the type of malt used. For example, black beer uses toasted malt. Another thing to bear in mind when talking about beer’s appearance is its transparence. There are two reasons why a beer can lose its transparence ? the grains’ proteins that float in it or the rest of the brewer’s yeast since the beer is not filtered.

• Alcoholic strength:

From non-alcohol to a maximum of 7 abv (alcohol by volume), beers have a variation as regards this. Though it may seem a minimum difference, it is not so. You have to be careful when serving an over 4 abv beer. Four points is the standard one and people get used to drinking beer with that alcohol content. If you serve a beer with a higher strength, it may be a problem. However, blonde and light beers do not reach that strength. That is the reason why you should check how much alcohol a different type of beer has and not traditional beer.
